In the late 1970's, Mati Klarwein experimented with the medium of fine art lithography. these lithographs are dominated by almost surrealistic, dream-like images. This original lithograph depicts a maze within a landscape where one is quite unsure what is land, water or reflected surface. To add to our uncertainty Mati Klarwein has painted a blue streak in watercolour in the upper left corner.

Lithograph by artist Mati (Abdul) Klarwein, from 1978, is a surrealist work. Signed and numbered in pencil. Edition: 300 with A.P. and H.C.

Born in Hamburg (1932), he and his family fled to Palestine in 1934 after the rise of Nazi Germany. Mati moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Julians. He later studied with painter Fernand Léger, who introduced him to the art of Salvador Dalí, Buñuel, and the world of surrealism. Best known for his art of the 1960s and 1970s, (featured in a vast collection of important album covers from musicians including Santana, Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix, ), Mati also worked more conventionally across a variety of genres including still life, landscape, and commissioned portraits.
